settling in | autumn touches

it is the end of october and i am taking it all in like a good book or a perfect cup of coffee before your children rise. lately, i have also been taking in the way the light shines in this mercurial glow as i find myself chasing its story in our new home. we are working on small projects and while the list is vast, there is something deeply romantic about working on small things together (and bigger ones). the kids laugh more here; they run and we explore and open up our new screen door to the refreshing fall breezes. we put on a record in the evening hours, glasses of cabernet in hand as the kids settle into a new bedtime rhythm here. we have not hung curtains or art onto the walls and i dream of changing all of the outdated lighting soon… but for now, i am enjoying just placing small touches of autumn around our home. i recently listened to a podcast (it can be found here) about decorating using your five senses and it was so insightful and so beautifully done. i love emily’s podcast, the next right thing, and really enjoy listening to it when i bring nash into the city twice a week for preschool. in this episode, she talks with her sister about decorating for each season … instead of walking into a store and loading up on goods, she recommends starting with natural elements and then focusing on the sounds (my autumn playlist), the textures, smells (diffusers are my go-to), taste, etc. when people walk in, we want people to feel comfortable and when you bring in the senses and less stuff, you create more space and a more welcoming atmosphere- you create a feeling.

i hope you enjoy a tiny peek into our home this season |
